For his seventh novel, Grange takes us once again in a macabre investigation followed by a new pair of police officers age and backgrounds but who understand them (like in "The Crimson Rivers "). In a dark and trashy Paris, they will do everything to find out who is behind this series of gruesome murders.

Grangé explores various themes, mainly the human voice in music (hence the title "Miserere, or Psalm 51, a religious piece of music sung a cappella), physical suffering and torture. While the investigation remains in France, you learn a lot about Chile's history: the fall of Allende, the Pinochet took power, relations with France, the torture of opponents, etc.. There is also a whole section of the Nazi history that is developed.

In a realistic framework, we Grangé weaves a story about once-preposterous but with many twists and suspense. Less gory than "Black Line" in the details of the murders but more trash in the atmosphere (especially when the inspectors go through a box of MS Paris, when visiting a junkie squat or even in some descriptions torture), we are not spared by human brutality. Besides, I think this novel is highly recommended to a mostly adult audience (or more than 16 years).

However, if it does not scare you and you like thrillers paced and efficient, Miserere is for you! Not the best but not the worst either, a good Grangé to discover the author!

Overall Rating: 8.5 / 10
